Jeans up your life

Winter is creeping in and I’m not quite sure yet how I feel about that! But it is the opportunity to invest in some cute and comfy jumpers. Okay, I admit I’ve gone a bit crazy on them. But that’s okay. I think.

Anyhowz, for the people who missed the supplement of ‘Het Belang van Limburg’ last weekend, shame on you! Because I was in it. But luckily for you guys, I have a crappy digital version of it - check the features section up there. I want to thank everyone for the lovely comments and great compliments I received from this. Big love from LDN to all of you.

Now, the outfit. I wore this thing when my mom was in town two weeks ago. I haven’t always been a fan of the jeans on jeans look but it seems to have grown on me. Jeans is just such a cool fabric that you can wear on almost every occasion. I paired it with my vans because we were walking all day and a  Zara coat.

Have a great weekend! Spread the bobby pins love.

P.S.: More on Victoria Beckham later, some complex matters are coming between you and a great story about her but I’m working on it.

Fashionable books

In our fast digital society, there is something very soothing in the reading of a book. I find it a perfect way to relax and at the same time it is a very inspiring act. Especially when you think of the amount of time the author has put up to create this piece for you to enjoy. Lately there has been a trend of fashion journalists, bloggers and designers that are writing up their ideas about different areas in the fashion industry. Some of them are definitely must-reads for people interested in everything related to fashion. But even if you’re not, it’s still cool to get a glimpse into their cool lives. I’ve composed a kind of top 3 of interesting books that should be on your to-read list.

Grace: a memoir by Grace Coddington

This book is hyping like crazy at the moment! Grace seems to be everywhere from the cover i-D to our bookshelves. The 71-year-old red head is a former model turned US Vogue fashion editor who featured in the documentary ‘The September issue’. She is the right hand of the queen of fashion Anna Wintour. And after her success in the Vogue documentary she decided to write down her memoirs. The cool lady visited London yesterday to do a book signing, which led a massive row of stiletto girls to Browns.

The Sartorialist: Closer by Scott Schuman

A picture-led publication and the second book from Scott Schuman, the man behind the famous blog ‘The Sartorialist'. He is one of the biggest influences on streetstyle ever. His first book was a major success and this second one will make you travel the whole world to have a closer look at people’s style. This book can serve as a real inspirational tool if you have a closet full of clothes and nothing to wear.

Impact: 50 years of CFDA by Cathy Horyn and Diane Von Furstenberg

This book is a fantastic archive of great American designers. The Council of Fashion Designers of America celebrated its 50th birthday this year which was a great occasion for CFDA president Diane Von Furstenburg to put some inspiring designs in the spotlight. The book also contains the history of CFDA and accompanied the exhibition that was put together as a celebration.

Bright light

Here I am again! Hurray! It’s been way to long since I last blogged but I will make it up to you this week! Promise!

I even tried to get over my fear of talking pictures in the middle of the city and had my mom shoot some of my casual outfit. In the spotlight are of course my new shoes! I totally love them and I need to tell myself not to wear them every day because they really go with any outfit. I wore these clothes during a calm Saturday with my mom in Spitalfields market just before she went home again. Not one of my best outfits but the background was so pretty that I couldn’t let this chance go by.

Anyhow, if you would like to see what I’m spending most of my time on here, I advice you to take a look at this blog. It’s my school blog, which contains the articles I wrote so far. Enjoy!

Travel souvenirs

California

Free time is becoming a precious gift out here with the amount of schoolwork I have piled up. I’m so ready for it to be the 4th of December so that it will all be over. For the time being that is.

So I can’t think of anything better than to reminisce about sunnier and funnier times at the moment. Especially visiting new and undiscovered territory is one of my favourite things in the world. And according to WGSN you can now show off all the places you visited just by wearing them on your tee or sweater – thank God, I started collecting these things ages ago already.
The vintage ones are the really cool ones of course with a lot of cheesy pictures of landmarks, palm trees and beaches. This type of clothing is suitable for both girls and boys so maybe you can steal some of your friends. Just a suggestion – for people who have no money, like me.

Meeting Geoffrey J. Finch

Friday, noon, East London. I find myself at the studio of Geoffrey J. Finch, real Aussie and the master brain Creative Director behind the luxury brand Antipodium. We stumble in 10 minutes early whilst the whole team is working on the new collection. The kind and down-to-earth Geoffrey started his clothing line at Antipodium in 2006 and his brand is thriving more than ever. Surrounded by creatives of all trades, Antipodium is that kind of community we all want to be in. Mister Finch gives us an insight in what he and Antipodium are all about.

Q&A with the man himself:

What are you working on for the moment?

We’re putting s/s13 into production and we’re about to sample pre-fall13. I’m about to design a/w, what season are we doing? a/w13. And I’m on my way to Japan next weekend. It’s supposed to be a quiet time but now that we’re doing so many collections, it doesn’t sort of stop, which I guess is good.

For your last collection you collaborated with doctor Goodacre. Was that a comment on society’s obsession with vanity and plastic surgery?

Absolutely. Humans can now achieve like an android perfection through surgery and it was a comment on the obsession that goes with that. And then technology which makes robots able to have emotions. It was sort of that, considering the impact of the two together.

Where do you find your inspiration?

I just note something and start to create an idea around it. Antipodium as a brand, is very much about the people that are around it. And their contributions to it and so yeah they provide a lot of the inspiration. And you’ll have a starting point and then you talk about it with one person, they’ll provide a view that you haven’t thought of. So it evolves like that.

Do you follow what people are doing trend wise to make sure that something is modern?

No, with brands like us, our major asset is personality. We’re a little brand. What big brands can’t offer is that personality and so we trade of that. Of course there are influences that are happening generally. But it is how you put your spin on it.

What kind of women do you design for?

She is basically all the women around the brand. They’re creatively minded, there is a lot of individuality, they’re interested in Fashion but they’re not totally fashion-interested. We don’t particularly have an age, ultimately they will be around thirty. What I really enjoy about the brand is that we actually have quite a broad range of customers. I particularly like our more mature customer, particularly at Liberty’s. The sort of artlady. It’s nice to be able to dress those women. It’s more of a - with a lack for a better cliché - state of mind.

How did you first become interested in the fashion industry?

My mom was a dressmaker so I guess I just kind of grew up with the sound of the machine basically and in fabric stores. It was always part of me growing up. I grew up in country Queensland, Australia and boys from country Queensland aren’t supposed to really do fashion. So then I was going to be an architect. And then I did some work experience with an architect and then I realised that you have to do like electrical plans so I was like maybe Fashion is much better. And now you just do shipping and logistics, which is so different from electrical plans. laughs

What do you like to wear?

I pretty much have a sort of uniform of bottomed-up shirt, pull-over, trousers of some sort. Jeans, trainers and a coat. Today I am wearing Nike’s, Kenzo chinos, a Antipodium unisex pull-over and a shirt that I got one of our factory’s to make.

Did you ever consider doing menswear?

We have done menswear capsules before which have been really good. But our womenswear business is doing so good that our menswear has sort of been pushed to the side line, so now I just get the factories to make me samples. But menswear will definitely come back at some stage but it needs a whole different team because it is a different timing. But one day.

What are your favourite places in London?

Unfortunately I do sort of get stuck around here. I live one block away. A friend of mine has got a restaurant which I spent a lot of time at. I guess it’s just seeing friends in different eating and drinking establishments. And then galleries of course, theatres. laughs

For the strange people that don't know Antipodium, quickly take a peek at their website and get enchanted by the pretty clothes.
